Microwave Installation Requirements

Requirements Overview: 

• Type: Different installation requirements exist for over-the-range, built-in, or countertop microwaves. 

• Clearances: Proper clearances for ventilation, door swing, and electrical access are critical. 

Over-the-Range Microwaves: 

• Width: Standard over-the-range microwaves are 30 inches wide. 

• Height: Ensure 24-30 inches of clearance between the microwave bottom and the cooktop surface. 

• Depth: Ensure the microwave fits flush with upper cabinets. 

Ventilation: 

• External Venting: For external venting models, ensure a ducted system is in place. 

• Recirculating Venting: For non-vented models, ensure recirculating filters are installed. 

Electrical Requirements: 

• Dedicated Outlet: Requires a 120V outlet on a dedicated 15-20 amp circuit. The outlet should be positioned inside the cabinet above the microwave. 

Built-In Microwaves: 

• Cabinet Cut-Out: Follow manufacturer specifications for cabinet cut-out dimensions. 

• Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation grilles are installed around the unit.
